Dear students
Many of you have AS or A2 exams in the next couple of
weeks. All of you, however, whether or not you are taking exams, and whether
you aspire to progress to Higher Education, to employment, or are in your first
year hoping to progress into year 2, have a critical few weeks ahead. Please do
not under-estimate the importance of the next 15 weeks!
Those of you aiming for certain grades for entry to
university have a massive incentive to revise hard over the coming weeks of
course. Don’t let yourselves be one of those students who we see in August
struggling to find a university place having narrowly missed their grades, and
kicking themselves that they didn’t work harder! Some students in this situation
will ask us if they can do a third year at College and resit their A levels.
Please don’t think that we will agree to this! You have 15 weeks or so until
your exams, that’s plenty of time to make a difference and show the examiner
what you are capable of!
Whether you are on an AS programme or an A2 one, you
should not be working at U grade standard in any subject. If you are, it should
be a temporary situation, that is rectified by hard work on you part, along with
support and help from your teachers, which is always available. If you continue
to work at U standard, and are clearly not making progress, we will make
decisions for you as to how to change the situation. You will not simply be
allowed to just carry on and fail the course. Dropping that course is not an
option either!
Senior tutors and subject staff will be having
conversations with many of you in the coming weeks, to try to encourage you to
work harder, to work more effectively, to attend 100% of the time, to attend
revision classes, to attend support classes, to do your homework and assignments
promptly and so on. Please don’t let yourselves down by putting in a poor
performance that is not a true reflection of your ability, and please don’t put
yourself in a situation where we have to make decisions for you regarding your
continuing at College!
If you have exams next week, do your best, and make
sure your best is at a standard you’re proud of!
